Review: Portable, ergonomic, timeless and fun. - There’s always a
moment with these retro handhelds where you realize you’re not
just buying a device, you’re buying someone else’s idea of
nostalgia, preloaded, compressed, and handed to you all at once.
Out of the box, it’s overwhelming in a good way. Thousands of
games, dozens of systems, everything from simple 8-bit titles to
Dreamcast and PlayStation, even pushing into PSP and some
GameCube territory if you’re willing to tinker. The screen is
sharp enough that older games actually feel cleaner than you
remember them, not just bigger. The controls are responsive, and
the detachable joysticks are more of a novelty than a necessity,
but they don’t get in the way. Performance is surprisingly decent
for what it’s trying to emulate, most of the classic systems run
without issue, and even the more demanding ones are playable if
you manage expectations. But there’s a catch. The included SD
card is the weak point. It’s the kind of storage that you plan to
replace it early which isn’t optional, it’s part of the setup.
Once you do that, the system becomes far more reliable. What
makes it interesting is the flexibility. RetroAchievements,
multiple emulators, the ability to adjust and tweak, it invites
you to go deeper if you want to. Or you can just pick it up and
play something familiar for ten minutes and put it down again. It
accommodates both. It’s not perfect, and it’s not premium. But it
captures something specific, access. Not to one game, or one era,
but to an entire backlog of gaming history in your hands,
imperfectly preserved but still very much alive. Portable,
