Rosewill 4U Server Chassis Rackmount Case | 12 Hot Swap 3.5", 2.5" SATA I, SATA II, SATA III SAS | E-ATX Compatible | 3 Front 120mm Fans, 2 Rear 80mm Fans | 2x USB 3.0| Front Panel Lock - RSV-L4412U Review: Fantastic server chassis - This Rosewill 4U server chassis is considered by many to be one of the best "economy" chassis out there. I'd beg to differ that this is one of the top chassis out there. Although you lose 3 drive bays by paying a bit more than some of the other Rosewill offerings, the hot swap bays are a tremendous value and you would be hard pressed to 3d print and/or DIY all of the parts necessary to recreate this setup. I did run into an issue with some missing screws on the chassis handle at the front but fortunately Rosewill includes a significant supply of spares inside the chassis. The chassis itself comes in a double-packed box with tons of styrofoam to keep the chassis safe from scratches and dents. Assembly was incredibly straight-forward with a ton of room for the ATX motherboard, memory, graphics (, and very large heat sink (Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE for size reference) that I was repurposing into a TrueNAS server. I did have to remove the large graphic card support bar spanning the top of the chassis. One mistake I made initially was to repurpose several modular power cables from the power supplies I've purchased over the years. I could have killled my motherboard as one of the manufacturers had reversed the polarity on their plugs and I could not POST. Once I confirmed I was using modular power cables from my actual power supply it was all good. The hot swap function works as intended and I was easily able add drives to my storage pools without rebooting. TrueNAS showed temperatures really low so airflow and fan directions work great. My one minor gripe is the use of Molex power receptacles on the drive bays. These connectors really have not been part of the SATA drive world for some time and I was surprised to see them. I had to buy SATA to Molex adapters in order to appropriately distribute the load across the power supply modular connectors/rails. One other tip is that if you have a home lab setup or smaller rack at home there are rack extenders that you can purchase to either extend the rack out front of the rack or to support the back. I opted for the former as I have a swinging wall-mount rack that would not be able to close had I done the latter. 5/5 stars for being an incredible value but functions like a very $$$ server chassis. Review: It does the job so far for a future NAS (JBOD now) Lack of phone support as advertized. 4 out of 5 - This is for the Rosewill 4U Server Chassis Rackmount RSV-L4412U. The company says call support and no one can answer any questions. The say email us. Why say call us? Nothing but rude unqualified people will treat you as a fool. No technical questions can be asked because it is a call center. I want to buy extra trays and to have explained why the front panel USBs are in a single cable and why? My Linux boards need breakouts to attache the USBs. As for the actual server case, it is made well as far as the metal case. Everything fits and works so far and the trays are said to be made of ABS plastic. As long as you put 2 screws (4 are better) the hard drives should be cooled and secured properly. Lightweights will find the sealed box heavy. Remove the case from the box and it's top metal cover. Next remove the internals to lighten the case up a bit. Pull all of the trays and set them aside. Mount the power supply last! Mount the motherboard first, then the power supply. After that any trays with drives are the very very very last thing after the case is mounted in a rack. After using the trays, sometimes I need to pop a drive or 2 from the case for reasons like boot from Windows or Linux. The Linux function is useful in cloning a failing or bad drive to another. No mistakes with that function, remove all but the source and target drives! Addition 2024-11-01: I wish someone had the foresight to allow unplugged drives to still sit in the bay and not electrically plugged in. In other words, the tray would be unplugged, have its latch shut, and put back in the bay slot, but not electrically connected, then close the front door. A few more millimeters spacing would have made that possible. Thoughtless design negates this simple function. I have to remove the populated drive trays and put them where, on the floor or a desk to be kicked or knocked over? It just seems like poor engineering. These things make me wonder what other "gotchas" exist? The cooling fans will of course be replaced in time with real ones like Noctuas. That didn't matter as a pre-purchase issue. I have another identical case coming for a friend. I hope he is 5 star happier with it. Me not so much.
