Review: Very good. - Very good quality
Review: A surprisingly decent XLR/1/4" microphone. - This is very
much a classic microphone; chunky metal shell, old-school on/off
slider and a little windscreen you stuff on to reduce plosives.
And it does exactly what you'd expect which is great; plug in,
turns on, makes your voice louder and it sounds pretty decent to
boot! It actually connects cleanly to a mixer, since it's an XLR
mic at heart, but I liked that it came with a XLR-to-quarter-inch
TS adapter cable too, so it can plugged into an amp or karaoke
box without hunting around for converters. I've been able to use
it on both a large karaoke speaker and even through my little
mixing desk to test, and it's behaved fine. No fuss, just give it
some gain and go. It does have that very familiar microphonic
issue that I've found in mics like this, where tapping or
brushing the body, even lightly, gets picked up loud and clear.
Not unique to this mic by any means, but worth noting that you do
need to be quite steady with it. Also, I wouldn't drop it, but it
feels like it could survive a drop or being on stage by pretend
rockstars. Sound-wise, it's decently clean for the price point. A
bit of plosive sensitivity without the foam cover, but with it
on, it holds its own at the cost of very slight clarity. Vocals
come through well, a bit low-mid boomy, and you can ride the
proximity effect (just talk very close to it) if you want even
more warmth. Nothing too fancy, and more than passable for casual
singing or speeches; if your karaoke machine has a EQ it's very
easy to dial in something that cuts through well. In the end, it
works fine and I'm pretty happy with it. I've handled a lot of
budget dynamic mics across the years, thanks to various projects,
and this one holds is pretty well all things considered.
