Review: A good choice if reducing plastic is the priority -
Toothbrushes are a lot about personal preference and finding what
works. I'm pretty impressed with this one, which is nothing to
write home about in the specialist-use category, but is by far
the best sustainable-materials brush I've ever tried. The blurb
says the handle is made of cornstarch and the bristles derived
from castor oil. I'd dispute the idea that this is "child sized"
as the product information states, but the head is smaller than a
standard major brandname manual, adult brush head, and the
bristles are pretty soft and gentle. For gum care, I personally
prefer the size, shape, and very soft, fine polyester bristles of
the Curaprox Ultra Soft, or an even smaller brush like the Tepe
Select to reach difficult areas, but of course those brands are
single-use plastic and an environmental nightmare. This more
eco-friendly one came a pretty close second for squeaky-cleaning
my teeth, but I didn't feel the same deep gum cleaning benefit
when using this as with those other brands. It also couldn't
reach the tricky area behind my impacted wisdom tooth, the head
being too big and inflexible (though soft enough for the delicate
gum there). The Curaprox, being even softer, much more flexible
and that little bit smaller, can get into the same space. The
other consideration is how long this will last. I'm not hard on
my plastic toothbrushes and, with regular sterilisation, tend to
use mine for a year or more before the bristles show any wear.
I'll keep using this one as part of my moutcare routine and see
how these eco-friendly castor oil bristles compare to the
eco-disaster plastic ones over time.
