Recommended both for wheel-throwing and hand-building, Amaco No. 77 Terra Cotta Clay is made from a mixture of finely ground red and buff clays, plus a medium mesh grog. Added to make the fired pottery more porous, grog also reduces cracking, shrinking, and warping. This clay is ideal for making tiles, planters, and other pieces intended for outdoor use.
Bisque fire to Cone 04 (1971°F, 1077°C). Amaco No. 77 fires from Cone 05–5 (1911°F–2205°F), with a recommended glaze firing of Cone 5 (2205°F). At Cone 04, the clay is a terra cotta color with a shrinkage of 6.75% and absorption of 9%. At Cone 5, the color is a rich brown-red with a shrinkage of 10.5% and absorption of 0.9%.
A 50 lb carton consists of two 25 lb bricks, each in a poly storage bag, so any amount can be used as required and the rest stored for future use.
