Review: Great Device!! - The TrimUI Smart Pro is an excellent
handheld, especially at its price point. I love that it combines
a 5" screen with a Linux-based OS—something I spent a lot of time
researching, and honestly, there aren’t many devices that offer
this combo. For those mentioning the lack of preloaded games:
while it does come with a few, it’s really designed for you to
add your own ROMs which are everywhere online. I personally
really like the CrossMix menu system, and there are some great
resources out there to help you get everything set up. If you're
diving into CrossMix, there is a guide on github that is
top-notch. The guide is super detailed—it walks you through
everything, from the ROM versions you need to how to use all the
OS features. Really well done. I decided to start fresh with a
new SD card and went with a Samsung Pro Plus microSD (128GB),
which was around $16.99. It’s definitely worth it—SD cards that
come with these devices tend to be lower quality and can cause
issues. A reliable card like the Samsung Pro Plus makes a big
difference. Installing CrossMix OS is simple: just copy the files
from the CrossMix download onto the card, then drop your ROMs
into the correct folders. If you need extra help, there are
plenty of YouTube videos and walkthroughs online. As for the
device itself—I love the 5" bright display, lighted joysticks,
the menu interface is slick, and overall it feels like a hidden
gem at this price. That said, I’d love to see a 'TrimUI Smart Pro
Ultra' someday, with a beefier processor and upgraded
D-pad/joysticks. As it stands, it runs everything from Atari 2600
to some PSP games. All in all, it’s a great little device and I’d
definitely recommend it.
Review: Brilliant retro handheld - I've started collecting retro
handhelds, and the TrimUI Smart Pro has quickly become one of my
favorites. It's more powerful than other entry-level handhelds,
which is great. What stands out most, though, is the screen. It's
vibrant and captivating. There's no backlight bleed. The stock
firmware works really well and is easy to use. There are also
several other firmware options available online. The most popular
are Crossmix and NextUI, which can improve the already-good
experience even more. I personally use and love NextUI.
Physically, the TrimUI Smart Pro feels premium. The d-pad and
buttons are responsive and satisfying. The menu/hotkey button is
positioned well, and I really like that it's on a separate side
of the device from the start and select buttons. This makes
toggling fastforward and saving/loading states a lot easier. It's
able to play a lot of games with ease and convenience, and it has
a notable performance increase over a lot of other devices in the
price-range. You can't go wrong with the TrimUI Smart Pro. It's
an excellent choice for retro gaming and worth every penny.
