Review: It really works well for YouTube VR videos without
needing to spend £100s! I love it - At the time of ordering this
white VR headset for my phone, it was on offer at £37.39. I have
been watching this product for some time and the price fluctuates
regularly, at the time this was the best price I had seen over a
number of weeks. First off, I am not a gamer, I am someone who
wants to watch 3D, 360 degree videos and 180 degree videos on
YouTube. I have just got a Galaxy A17 phone which has a
gyroscope, which means I can now view 180 and 360 degree videos
which react to head movement. I have had it for over a month now
so I feel I can write a reasonably informed review. The headset
is reasonably well made and is as light as it can be without
feeling too flimsy. The lenses can be set to be wider apart or
closer together to account for different pupil distances. This
adjustment is very important as it can also help focusing. Each
lens can be focused separately too, but in the end I found that
both lenses at their closest setting worked fine even though I
wear glasses for close up work and have a much stronger
prescription in my left eye and I found this setting worked well
even without my glasses on. I also found that when I let other
people use the headset who normally wore glasses, that they found
the headset fine too. The headset works with glasses too, but the
difference is marginal with them. Video quality also plays a big
part in how clear/sharp the picture is. One of the best videos to
test the product is to search YouTube for 360 degree videos and
watch the 360 airline pilots view or search for VR edge of space
videos for some immersive 3D effects and ambient sound tracks.
The headphones are perfectly fine in use, but for my Android
phone I had to buy an adapter as it only had a USB C connector,
not a 3.5mm phono socket. I also discovered that only an adapter
with a DAC chip worked (still a cheap thing to buy though). Once
connected to the phone, I could control sound volume using the
buttons under the headset on the left and in addition I could
also pause and start the YouTube video too, which is very useful
if you have selected a video to play with the phone door open so
you can get to the screen and then want to watch the video from
the beginning once you have shut the phone hinged door and put
the headset on again. The most important additional feature of
this headset is the button on the right hand side of the headset,
this is the control button and when you press it a little lever
pops up and touches the screen to simulate tapping the screen.
Without this you will not be able to get rid of adverts, rewind
the video or skip to another video with the headset on and the
phone shut inside. My only serious criticism is that the padding
on the bridge of the nose is not enough and when sitting up I
need to hold the headset up a little. Lying down, there is no
problem as the weight of the phone is not as bad. All in all, I
am delighted with this VR headset, I like the white colour too as
it doesn't look too cumbersome. The plastic lenses seem to be
quite clear but don't expect a crystal clear view, there will
always be a slight lack of sharpness . This may also be due to
the Galaxy A17 only having a 1080p screen resolution, maybe
higher resolution could be better? I certainly found some of the
videos to be absolutely mesmerising and some had lovely sound
tracks which sounded great through the headphones. I previously
had an almost identical looking white headset with no headphones
and crucially no additional controls... the headset allowed me to
see the videos fine, but I couldn't pause the YouTube or bypass
the adverts without removing the phone, which was really
annoying. Would I recommend this headset? 100% for watching
YouTube VR videos without having to pay £400 or more for a
dedicated full VR headset. For gaming, you may need an additional
remote controller which other people sell, but be warned reading
text on the screen is not ideal as it is a bit fuzzy. I am sure
serious gamers wouldn't like this though, but for getting a feel
for VR, it may be worth it for them. Hope this helps, as I feel I
have well and truly had my £37.39 worth ot enjoyment with this
headset.
Review: Pointless - It looks great but I honestly don’t
understand what it’s supposed to do, the screens the same as
seeing it on your phone. There is no experience and for that
reason I’m upset I can’t return it (I missed the return window).
It was a gift for my son and in the beginning he was v
enthusiastic about it so I thought it was good but having tried
it myself I don’t see the point of it. It’s quite literally like
wearing goggles and my sons lost interest in it after realising
there isn’t more to it.
