Rio Grande Games Tzaar

TZAAR is the seventh strategic release in the acclaimed GIPF project series, crafted for two players who appreciate elegant design and tactical depth. This abstract strategy game challenges you to make meaningful choices on every turn, combining accessibility with intellectual engagement.Game Objective: Outmaneuver your opponent by either forcing them to run out of one piece type or positioning them where capturing is impossible. You control 30 pieces divided into three distinct types, arranged on a distinctive hexagonal board.Gameplay Flow:Setup phase: Players alternate placing pieces on the board strategicallyActive phase: Each turn requires two moves—first capturing an opponent's piece, then either capturing again or strengthening your position through stackingStrategic tension: Deciding when to capture versus when to stack creates the game's signature decision-making intensityWhy TZAAR Stands Out: The genius lies in its elegant constraint. Stack pieces too frequently and your opponent dominates the board. Capture too aggressively and your remaining pieces lack strength. This fundamental tension ensures no two games feel identical, rewarding both planning and adaptability.Perfect for Strategy Enthusiasts: At 30 to 60 minutes per game, TZAAR respects your time while delivering substantive strategic play. Ideal for couples, partners, or close friends seeking meaningful competition that strengthens bonds through shared intellectual challenge. Ages 14 and up.
