Review: Good set with great figures. - I bought this set as a
main Christmas gift for my near 12 year old son who is heavily
into Star Wars, especially clone wars and prequel era sets. Being
significantly involved in the Lego Star Wars collecting community
I was already well aware of the set’s perceived shortcomings,
mainly criticisms of the size, cost and the stability of the
final build. Whilst I fully agree that the RRP is excessive, I
waited to purchase the set at a time when it had been discounted
and also took advantage of a further reduction via a gift
certificate to bring the overall cost down to a more acceptable
level. Now that we have the set in hand, I am pleased with the
accuracy of the build to the on screen vehicle. Although
downsized compared with earlier models, this is the most clean
and accurate looking version of the vehicle Lego have produced to
date. The shaping and tiled off look of the side panels are
particularly pleasing to the eye. Stability wise, we have no real
complaints. As with any Lego set, you need to handle it
respectfully and with some level of care. My son has many Lego
sets, especially Star Wars ones and has learned to handle them
suitably over the years. As this is a set intended for an older
child audience, I don’t really see any problems. Unless you do
silly things like picking it up via the side panels alone, you
aren’t going to have a problem. The downsizing again is less of a
problem for us as we have limited display space and my son finds
it difficult to accommodate too many large builds into his MOC
battle dioramas. I appreciate the fact that you can still get
quite a few clones inside the build, with the interior access
being maximised as much as possible via the use of opening or
removable panels. The usual play features, such as stud shooters
are present and the suspension and steering work well and are fun
to use. It has been a bit controversial that the chosen figures
in this set have been Galactic Marines, mainly due to community
expectation of another vehicle being produced (UT AT), which is
perhaps more closely associated with them. That said, I can
understand why the other vehicle hasn’t been produced and I
wouldn’t want this to be a barrier to getting the galactic
marines released. They are obviously much sought after figures
among clone fans and my son has been after adding some of them to
his clone army for some time. They are well realised in Lego form
with an all new dual moulded helmet along with their dark red
markings helping distinguish them from imperial snow troopers.
Lego could very easily have recoloured the existing snow trooper
helmets if they were feeling lazy, but I’m glad they went the
extra mile. With a brick built backpack, the only thing the
figures lack is a red wastcape, which is printed on the front of
the legs. I do hope one day wastcapes make a return to figures
like these as the printing is ineffective from the sides and back
of the figure and for this particular figure, it really is an
important part of the design. I also do not feel that the
inclusion of such elements really detract from kids playing or
posing the figures. Commander Bacara also boasts an all new
helmet mould that is currently unique to him, albeit the
proportions of the ‘cheeks’ are not quite right in my opinion.
Other than that, he is a solid figure again, who would benefit
from a waist cape for peak accuracy. The Ki Adi Mundi figure is
very similar to the last one we had, with some minor print
improvements, arguably making a good figure even better. The
requisite three battle droids are also included and as ever,
welcome for droid army building. Overall, we are glad to add this
juggernaut (aka turbo tank) to our collection as it was one of
the few major clone wars era vehicles missing from my son’s
extensive collection and represents a major tick for him!! RRP
price aside, both me and my son are happy with the set and if you
can get it suitably discounted, at around £100ish or so, I
wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.
Review: Great build - My son loved this built. He has a few Star
Wars legos already. He particularly likes the figures and the
fact that is a different vehicle to usual Star Wars ones.
