Review: Excellent quality kettle for camping! - I bought this for
camping because other reviewers said it was great, and it is! We
used it to primitive and (very basic) campground camp for 3 weeks
in the Rockies this summer and it was AWESOME. We used it
endlessly for heating water for tea, coffee and making dehydrated
meals. (Mountain House rocks.) It pours beautifully, which really
matters. The handle doesn't get hot if you keep it above the pot.
And when we got home, and it was all black with soot, I used Bar
Keeper's Friend and restored it to its pristine shiny original
self. Great value for money. It doesn't have a whistle, but I
didn't want one. We're in the wilds of the Rockies, or in a
campground. I'm not distracted. I'm sitting by the fire waiting
for my kettle to boil. I don't need a whistle. That said, though,
it had a distinctive and fairly loud sound when it was close to a
boil... So that was nice, because you knew the water was ready
without looking inside. The kettle is excellent quality, thick
metal, hardy and good for rough camping with. (Obvs you're not
going to use this if you're hiking in and carrying everything. We
were car camping, essentially.)
Review: Well made, clever lid retainer design, no spills, hangs
level on a hook, very light! - For full disclosure, I've not
taken this camping into the woods, but have used it in the
backyard over fire pit, over a solo stove campfire stove and over
a standard propane Coleman double burner. The kettle is very well
made, surprisingly light and the design of it is quite
interesting. Clever, actually. being a traditional scandinavian
design, it is meant to be used and abused. The spout is pointing
nearly straight up, so when you pour, it is a nice clean pour
with no spills and when it boils, no bubbles spilling out either.
The bail has a notch to lock in upright, so you can keep it cool
or actually suspend the kettle on it over fire and because it is
V-shaped, if you hang it on a chain or a hook, the kettle will be
hanging perfectly level. My absolute favorite of this whole rig
is the lid! The bail itself acts as a retainer, so when you pour
boiling water, the lid will stay in place and not fall out, but
of you close the bail down and take the lid out, you can stuff
this kettle full of goodies, be it fire kits, coffee/tea bags,
you name it. At that point you have a 1.6L hard shell container
to store stuff in. So, it is more than just a kettle. good piece
of kit and glad I bought the biggest one!
