Well, instead of course nowadays we can do it with a Raspberry pie running Retropie. I bought this set of two player buttons and have built a test assembly to try out one of the sets and I have to say I'm very impressed with the results. It's a proper retro feel to the joystick and buttons, they illuminate nicely thanks to an LED backlight. I powered one set off of the Raspberry Pie with no issues, and Retropie detected the controller board with no problems. Can't say much about longevity or wear and tear yet as I've only just got it setup. Cables are all good quality, and the microswitches rotate out of the housings easy enough. Be advised that you remove the microswitches in order to mount the buttons in place and you're likely to put some of them or all of them in the 'wrong way round' which simply means the LED will not light in this orientation. As the instructions say, just swap the power lines round and you're back up and running.
