Review: Large Volume Feather-Weight Kettle - The MSR Titan Kettle
(1400ml) is an exceptional piece of ultralight cookware, widely
praised by users and experts alike for its ideal balance of large
capacity and minimal weight, making it a top choice for
backpacking duos or solo hikers who need more volume. Crafted
from durable titanium, this kettle is half the weight of steel
while being twice as strong as aluminum, ensuring it can
withstand rigorous backcountry use for many years! Reviewers
consistently highlight thoughtful design updates in this current
model, such as the silicone-coated folding side handles and lid
handle that stay cool to the touch, and interior volume
measurement marks, which add significant convenience and prevent
burnt fingers or the need for a separate measuring cup. Its wide,
stable base boils water efficiently, and the refined spout allows
for a precise, drip-free pour, which is an advantage for
preparing dehydrated meals or pour-over coffee on the trail!
Despite its many advantages, the MSR Titan Kettle (1400ml) does
have a few drawbacks worth considering. The primary trade-off for
its large capacity and lightweight material is its packability;
it takes up a notable amount of room in a pack, though this is
mitigated by its ability to nest an 8-ounce fuel canister and a
small stove, such as the MSR PocketRocket Deluxe, inside it. As
with all uncoated titanium pots, food other than boiled water can
stick and potentially burn due to titanium's excellent heat
transfer properties and tendency to develop hot spots, requiring
careful heat management and stirring during cooking. Some users
have noted the lid could fit more securely to prevent it from
falling off inside a pack, and the silicone on the handles can
show wear over time with heavy use. Overall, the MSR Titan Kettle
(1400ml) is considered a gold standard in ultralight cookware,
offering remarkable versatility as a pot, kettle, and even a bowl
for minimalist campers. While its price point is on the higher
end, the quality, durability, and practical features, such as the
hangable lid and measurement lines, justify the investment for
serious backpackers and campers looking for reliable,
high-performance gear. It is a highly recommended, albeit niche,
item for those who prioritize weight savings and functionality
for one to two people out in the backcountry!
Review: Very light - Nice and light. Big enough that can boil 1L
of water at a time. The handles never got hot when using. The
vent hole in the lid is nice because you can see the steam shoot
out when it starts boiling.
