What Happens When We Listen - Student Voices from Jamaica and the Enduring Power of Human Understanding

In 1993, eighteen American college students from the University of New Mexico traveled to Jamaica as part of a course in tropical biology. Their assignment was deceptively simple but profound: to meet someone, listen carefully, and write about the world as that person understood it. What emerged were essays of uncommon empathy and insight. These students crossed boundaries of race, nationality, and economic circumstance, not as observers, but as learners. They encountered Jamaicans not as abstractions or stereotypes, but as individuals with hopes, histories, humor, and dignity. In the doing so, they discovered how much they shared with them. More than thirty years later, these remarkable student voices resonate with renewed urgency. At a time when public discourse in the United States increasingly dehumanizes immigrants and people of color, these essays stand as a powerful counterpoint. What happens when we stop teaching, learning and practicing the art of understanding one another? How did we arrive at today’s fractured social and political landscape? This book offers a testament to what education can accomplish to regain the human values that connect us across borders, cultures, and time. Every essays reminds us that understanding grows not from fear and distance, but from proximity, humility and genuine listening. This collection, unedited by hindsight, offers an emotional and moral clarity that few works can honestly claim: voices thirty years hence that speak directly to our fractured civic moment that prioritizes policy over people.
