Review: Simple all-in-one scanning solution - I really like this
Film Scanner from PORTTA. I've tried a few over the years, but
most tend to have clunky proprietary software or simply don't
yield quality results. This unit is completely self-contained.
Simply insert negatives or slides, preview and scan. The unit
will transfer transferring results as a JPG to a removable SD
card (you'll need to supply your own). The interface is very
simple, facilitating 16MP or 22MP images. Adapters are supplied
for 35mm film, slides, 125 and 110 format film. The beauty of
this process is to simply sit and scan your collection without
having to bother with a computer. Once done, simply insert the SD
card into the latter and start using your favourite editing
tools. You can also preview images on a larger screen using the
HDMI port, but I've honestly found the built-in screen to be more
than ample. That's it. Simple and straightforward with no
external software and high quality results. It's not a cheap
unit, but I feel the price reflects its quality and simplicity.
It can visit any film / slide collection and digitise them. A ton
of nostalgic fun, I've been scanning negatives that are 50(!)
years old with great results. Definitely recommended!
Review: An ok unit, bit overpriced (in my opinion) + my unit had
a particle on lcd which would not clear - Arrived as part of the
desertcart vine review programme. This review is for the PORTTA
Film Scanner with 5" LCD Screen, 22MP Slide & Negative Scanner.
An ok scanner, in my opinion not worth its £200 (current) price
tag. Pros: The screen is bright, button operation is very solid
when pressed. The image quality was ok, 99% of images seemed a
little washed out for colour (regardless of adjustment) but these
were totally acceptable due to quality/age of negatives used. The
menu navigation is fine, a little clunky (as most are) but it
does make sense - so was good overall. The film adapters are
clearly marked, easy to read which way they fit, can be a little
fiddly when inserting some film but this is no worse than most
others. Nice they've included a cleaning brush. I liked you could
tweak the image before committing to capture, a few button pushes
can correct colour, brightness, sharpness and layout/flips. Cons:
Build quality is ok, does feel a little cheap compared to my old
non-lcd screen version - which feels more industrial than this
unit. I could not get a mark of the screen (which is how it was
supplied), its seems there is something squished in between the
camera and monitor somewhere (and yes, I've removed the supplied
screen protector). I've highlighted this in a pic but, this mark
doesn't show in the actual captures so it could just be a failed
screen pixel or particle sandwiched somewhere inside. This was
annoying to see every time, I tried cleaning etc, and even tried
blowing compressed air onto the camera lens directly - but this
particle would not shift. The unit is very laggy to use, 3
seconds for pretty much all of the bigger actions, gets
frustrating as a result. The price point is too high (showed £199
when ordered), I think there are many better options lower priced
than this. I'd suggest this it's more like a £99-£120 unit than
currently being marketed. Conclusion: As an IT person, I feel
this has some positives but this has more negatives (sorry for
the pun) for its price point. Yes, this has good options to
manipulate the image on the fly BUT, this isn't worth £200 (in my
opinion). Thanks AMZ.
